MILWAUKEE – Dave Roberts, coach of the Los Angeles Dodgers, is "very willing" to turn to Clayton Kershaw in the seventh game of the National League series on Saturday.
"It's hard to see a scenario where it's not part of this game," Roberts said just over two hours before 8:09 pm. AND first step.
Walker Buehler, a 24-year-old rookie, will start alongside right-handed Jhoulys Chacin, right on the side of Brewers Milwaukee Brewers.
Brewers manager Craig Counsell said his office was "set up as well as we would have hoped, I think, entering the seventh game of a series".
The main reason is that they did not have to use Josh Hader, their devastating left-handed reliever, in Friday's 7-2 win in Game 6.
Hader is resting for three days and could probably provide up to three innings, but the player closest to the Dodgers, Kenley Jansen, has had two days off and can contribute to more than three outs.
Kershaw appears as the joker. The Ace of the Dodgers shot 98 shots while spinning seven ball heats in one inning in Wednesday's fifth game, but he will nonetheless start the game in the paddock. Kershaw pitched four scoreless innings in the seventh game of last year's World Series – a possible defeat – just three days after making 94 shots in a fifth game.
Roberts said it was "difficult" to determine how much he could provide for this game 7. Kershaw will follow his usual routine before the start, then discuss with Roberts what he feels.
Roberts said the Dodgers want Kershaw to go "as hard as possible for as long as possible," but they have not yet figured out what it might look like.
"It's a nine-sleeve season today," said Counsell. "And that's how you treat."
