Drew Brees completed a 72-yard pass to Michael Thomas for a late touchdown and ended the Los Angeles Rams' perfect performance, as the Rams fell to the New Orleans Saints 45-35 in the Superdome.
Entering Sunday's game, the Rams were the only undefeated team in the NFL after their first 8-0 start since 1969.
The Rams found themselves in a 21-point hole in the first period, but they tied the score at 35 with 9:57 to play.
It's only the second time in two seasons that Sean McVay has coached that the Rams have fallen behind by 21 points or more. The other case was in the 17th week of last season, when McVay chose to rest for his beginners in the playoffs.
A win from behind would have been Rams' third comeback in the history of the franchise.
Instead, the Rams have been unable to defeat their 21-point deficit since the 12th week of the 2005 season against the Houston Texans. According to ESPN Stats & Information, they lost 49 points in their flight with 21 points or more.
In the first half of Sunday, the Rams defense had little response to Brees, as the NFL's all-time leading passer helped the Saints total 313 passing yards and had three touchdowns. Alvin Kamara is rushed for two touchdowns.
The Rams seemed to have got the first break after both teams scored for their first two goods.
Linebacker Samson Ebukam forced a fumble retrieved by Aaron Donald.
But the offensive stalled and the field firing unit started. A false pitching attempt pushed striker Johnny Hekker to rush for three yards before being eliminated from the field, one meter from the first.
From there, the dynamic has changed.
The Saints scored a touchdown in the next set and Greg Zuerlein followed with a failed 51-yard field goal. The Saints scored again and it appeared that the Rams would have the opportunity to close the half.
But Goff started an interception, his sixth of the season, with 1:08 to play in the half and the Saints converted the delivery into another touchdown to take a 35-14 lead.
Zuerlein closed the half with a 56-yard placement and the Rams led 35-17.
The Rams became the first team to start the season 8-0 or better and to award at least 35 points in the half, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
The Rams scored 18 unanswered points early in the second half, until Brees joined Thomas on the 72-yard score with just under four minutes left.
The Rams will then return to Los Angeles to take on the Seattle Seahawks.
