While voters in 50 states are waiting to see if women will make history on polling day, a Democrat from Guam has just made his own story.

Lou Leon Guerrero, the current president of the Bank of Guam, was elected the first female governor of the US insular territory, beating his titular opponent, Republican lieutenant governor Ray Tenorio, by more than 8,600 votes, according to the final unofficial results released at 7 am Wednesday morning local time.

Leon Guerrero will be the ninth elected governor of US territory. With his team-mate Joshua Tenorio, Leon Guerrero won 50.7% of the vote, while Ray Tenorio and Tony Ada won 26.4% of the vote. Leon Guerrero's margin of victory is large enough to avoid a second round. Pacific Daily News.

"We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to bring positive change to all of our people," said Leon Guerrero.

Democrat Mike San Nicolas was elected to the US Congress, without the right to vote, while Leevin Camacho will be the next attorney general of the island territory. Democrats will also retain the majority in the legislature of the territory of 15 people.
