The winning ticket was found about two weeks before it expired.

A Louisiana couple has more than a million additional reasons to be grateful after finding a winning lottery ticket while doing the housework for Thanksgiving.

Tina Ehrenberg said she found a pile of lottery tickets on her nightstand while she was ensuring that her house was uncluttered before she received her family for the US holidays.

One of these tickets earned her, as well as her husband, a jackpot of $ 1.8 million.

The winning ticket was found about two weeks before it expired.

This was from the June 6 draw and was to be claimed within six months.

"We checked the numbers again and again," said Harold Ehrenberg at the Louisiana Lottery Corporation.

He said that he was still waiting for something to go wrong before he could officially claim the prize.

The couple is from Mandeville, a small town about 120 km east of the state capital, Baton Rouge.

They collected $ 1.3 million after state taxes and federal taxes, and plan to put the gains aside for retirement.

"We do not intend to buy anything crazy or make great trips," Ms. Ehrenberg said.

Mr. Ehrenberg said that "the most fun will be to deposit this check".
