Louisiana mayor prohibits Nike items

The mayor of Kenner, Louisiana, reportedly banned city departments from buying Nike products.

Mayor Ben Zahn's memo of 5 September prohibits the city's recreation department or any improvement club from using its facilities to buy or accept delivery of Nike sportswear products or products bearing the company logo.

The memo comes after Nike launched its "Dream Crazy" campaign featuring former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick unleashed a wave of controversy last year by refusing to stand up during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racism.

The reaction to Nike's decision to use Kaepernick was fast and passionate, with customers voting to boycott items from the sportswear manufacturer.

Zahn's memo stated that the purchase of any Nike merchandise, including clothing, shoes, sports equipment or other items, must be approved by the Director of the City's Recreation and Parks Department.

Politics is not the first reaction to Nike's controversial announcement.

Last week, the College of the Ozarks in Branson, Missouri, dropped its affiliation with Nike on Kaepernick's ads.
