Love it or hate it, there are more varieties of sweet corn than ever this Halloween

What's hard to understand about corn-flavored sweets – not corn, but any other candy that tastes like it – is that it's a candy more defined by its texture than by its taste. What is the "sweet corn taste" other than the slightly caramelized sugar? Are not sweets just corn candies? . . sweet sugar?

It's the mysteries of the universe that pop up, like ghosts, every Halloween – a season of sweet corn. Some people will never struggle with one or the other of these issues as they will never let a sweet corn kernel touch their lips. It's one of the most controversial sweets. "Satan's ear wax," they say.

A Mashable poll found that sweet corn was the most hated in 21 states. There is a famous Lewis Black Bit where he questions about the origin of sweet corn. "All made corn candies were made in 1911. So, as no one eats this product, there is one tonne left each year. And the sweet corn company sends the guys to the villages and collects all the sweet corn in the dumpsters we throw out, "he says.

It is not too far, at least for the date. According to the National Confectioners' Association, sweet corn was invented in the 1880s and Americans went crazy, with its indiscernible sugar taste and slightly bland, marshmallow texture. For about 100 years, it remained virtually unchanged. But recently, corn-candy makers have replaced it with new flavors. And other candy makers have tried to capitalize on nostalgia for flavor by offering corn candy treats – whatever their significance. Here's our assessment:

Sweet corn with natural aromas of Brach (gluten free): If sweet corn is a bit too orange to your taste, there is a completely natural alternative: Brach's, the sweet corn swab, offers a version of the colorful candy with beta carotene and turmeric instead yellow 6, yellow 5 and red 3. It also does not contain gluten and its packaging is of good quality to make you believe that it is a health food. It has a pastel look, and the outside of the candy kernels seemed slightly cracked – scary! It has exactly the same taste as ordinary sweet corn, I promise.

Maize Maple Brach: These candy beans are available in different kaki flavors and look a bit like stained coffee teeth. They do not actually contain maple syrup, in case you ask yourself. They are . . . All right, if you're in that kind of thing? They sort of taste the aroma sachets that you put in oatmeal. The combination of maple corn and sweet corn is a nice controversial marriage of unpopular flavor and texture. I therefore welcome this very bold decision.

Sweet corn sweets: Two flavors, a bag. There are reddish orange candies, which are scented with apple pie, and especially with cinnamon flavor with a hint of artificial apple. And then there's the sweet brown corn, which tastes like pumpkin pie and has a vague taste of medicine and chewing gum. do not all must be spicy with pumpkin.

S'mores corn candies from Brach: They have a dark brown chocolate base, a white marshmallow medium and a light orange / beige tip for the graham cracker, which is pretty clever. Do you like Tootsie Rolls but would you like a less mellow and more friable texture? Then you will like these.

Corrosive candies for children Candy corn: We expected it to be a Sour Patch Kid gelatin molded into a Halloween shape adapted to the seasons. Instead, it was a sweet, fruit-flavored corn covered with Sour Patch dust, a marriage of texture and slightly disturbing flavor. Yet it works, in a strange way. At least it was better than corn with pumpkin pie. It comes in orange and grape, and the latter is surprisingly good. I would not recommend it to people over 11, but I bet it would be a hit at your child's Halloween party.

Sweet white corn from M & M: This is the traditional M & M color range of white, orange and yellow sweet corn, and that's where the similarities end. They taste like white chocolate. They are White chocolate. White chocolate is the worst flavor of M & M Skip.

Purple corn sweets: Did you know that marshmallow was an ingredient in the original sweet corn recipe? These marshmallows have the shape of a sweet corn, but they are more scented with marshmallow than sweet corn. It would be a good garnish for Halloween cupcakes or Rice Krispie treats.

Joe Corn Candy Popcorn: It's a thick corn, covered with sweets, in the colors of sweet corn, and it's really good. You could inhale an entire bag. It's like the best possible form of Cracker Jack. It does not particularly taste sweet corn, but what is the taste of sweet corn? We do not care?

Corn Popcorn Candy Charms: That's what you get for your tour de force if you hate them
