BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) – About 10 in 10,000 people are living with HIV / AIDS in China, a low rate compared to other countries, according to the National Health Commission (NHC).
Sex is the main way to contract HIV in China, said a health official in a statement released Friday.
However, China has essentially prevented the spread of HIV through blood transfusions, with nearly zero cases of infection recorded through this channel and through the use of other blood products, added the NHC.
Wang Bin, an NHC official responsible for the prevention and control of the disease, said that HIV transmission through injecting drug use was also controlled, with reported cases of contraction of HIV by injection drug in 2017, registering a decrease of 44.5% compared to 2012.
Meanwhile, the rate of mother-to-child transmission has risen from 7.1 percent in 2012 to 4.9 percent in 2017, Wang added.
NHC has stepped up its efforts to screen for HIV and find people with HIV, Wang said, adding that a total of 200 million people in China had been tested for HIV. 39 last year, double that of 2012.
About 80.4% of people living with HIV / AIDS in China received anti-virus treatment in 2017, with a treatment success rate of more than 90%, said the official.
Noting that prevention and treatment of HIV / AIDS are always difficult, Wang said that NHC would step up its efforts to warn and educate those at risk of contracting HIV, promote unique screening, counseling, diagnosis and treatment, and mobilize social forces, companies, funding agencies, health organizations and volunteers to participate in the fight against the disease.
According to a joint assessment of the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, UNAIDS and the World Health Organization, about 1.25 million people living with HIV / AIDS in China at the end this year and 80,000 newly infected people each year.
