Despite his well-documented struggles in the second half, Luis Severino may have re-entered the Wild Card image.
We all know the story of the New York Yankees pitcher season, Luis Severino. On July 1, he led the American League with a score of 1.98 and was undoubtedly the favorite of AL Cy Young. Everything collapsed after that, as Severino's ERA inflated to 3.46 before his start Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox.
This outing would be important for the young right-hander, as the Yankees had treated September as an audition to find out who would get the ball to start the Wild Card game. Severino needed to get up and the boy never did.
The 24-year-old has thrown a gem against the best baseball offense, allowing a run in seven innings. He eliminated six players, including Mookie Betts, the favorite of AL MVP. He seemed to recover his moxie too, pumping and showing emotion after recording some big bonuses. For a pitcher whose difficulties have been mainly attributed to a lack of self-confidence, such an outing can take a long time.
Now, two weeks away from the Wild card game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone has an even harder decision to make.
Severino gradually withdrew from the scene with his fall in the second period, as Masahiro Tanaka and J.A. Happ appeared as a favorite. Tanaka has been particularly unassailable these days as he has pitched a tiny 0.43 ERA with 24 strikeouts in his last three starts.
Happ has been an anchor point in the rotation since it was put on scratches, posting a 6-0 record with an ERA of 2.39. He dominated the Red Sox in his career, however, Aaron Boone could be encouraged to save him for a two-start role in a potential ALDS match with Boston.
However, as a result of Severino's dominant performance, Boone could be tempted by the adventurer of his ailing ace.
But considering Severino's many explosions in the last two months – and last year's Wild Card game – is it worth it?
