Take off the Hawaiian shirts, the Detroit Tigers baseball cap, the Old Düsseldorf beer and the red Ferraris, Magnum P.I. is back tonight with a modern version of the classic series, which initially played Tom Selleckbut is titrated in 2018 by Jay Hernandez.

"Our runner Peter Lenkov was a big fan of the original series, so he did tons of research, "Hernandez told Parade.com in this exclusive interview. "So, he knows all these little pieces of character and history that he has integrated into our show. So, for the fans, there will be Easter eggs throughout the episodes.
The only thing that will be different is that Hernandez is going to have a top lip without hair. He says, "I will not have a mustache, but we are also paying tribute to that."

Did you watch the original series?
I did it, actually. I guess they were reruns I was watching, but I was watching. I thought it was good. I was a big fan. I liked it Tom Selleck; I loved the show.
Have you contacted Tom Selleck or did Tom Selleck contact you?
I did not hear from Tom. I know Peter spoke to him and the conversation went very well. He gave us his blessing,

What advice did runner Peter Lenkov give you on the creation of the character?
One of the most important things was to differentiate the two and, for Peter, the producer of the series, not to look for someone who looked like Tom, to feel like Tom and D & # 39; act like Tom. It's a recipe for disaster to try to replace Tom, so they obviously wanted to go in a different direction and capture the essence of what he was and what he brought to the show, which was his charm. So, I think, for Peter, it was more something intangible, the charm element. He thought I could bring that to the character. So, I was very flattered.
You had to move to Hawaii to film that. How is this transition?
It's interesting. I would never have thought of being in Hawaii. It's not on my list of places to live. That said, it's a beautiful place. I'm shooting a show that's this iconic IP [intellectual property] that people know around the world. So, it's a huge opportunity for me.
It's really fun to shoot. I like to go to work and spend time in beautiful places, so I have a good time. I did not see much in Hawaii because I was so busy, but after all that I could explore the island.
What's different is that it's more action-oriented. How much do you have to do? And did you have to learn how to dive and paddle?
I did it. For surfing skiing, I took a lesson. Its pretty hard. And the day we fired, it was raining and there was wind, so non-ideal conditions, but we did it. The scuba diving scene in the original draft of the pilot was much more involved. It was like this whole fight scene unfolding under the water. It was super amazing, but it was too crazy to shoot the time we had, so it was cut off.
So, I got my diving certificate. I was jumping through obstacles trying to do it, passing tests, diving into the water and doing free dives and all that, and we did not find ourselves using it. So, it was disappointing, but fortunately, at some point, we will be able to go back and take advantage of it.
I would obviously like to do as many stunts as I can without hurting myself. But, this is one aspect of the series that I find very amusing. On the pilot, we were big with the action. I think some of the following episodes will not be filled with action.
The scene where Magnum jumps from the car to the helicopter is pretty crazy.
Yes, it's crazy. It's like Justin Lin put his stamp on it, no? So, obviously, there will still be a lot of action, but probably not because of the weather. It's a real factor.
Do they really destroy Ferrari?
No. The Ferrari that is being demolished is like a Honda, a Toyota or something like that. But they build this hull on the outside so that it looks exactly like a 488. It's too expensive to destroy three Ferrari in the pilot episode.
I looked for it because I only made a change of gear twice in my life, and that's when I was trying to learn, so I discovered that the Ferrari are mostly automatic.
But, it was a stick, the 388. The old one was a stick, and when we started firing, the first AD came back to me with that air of panic and said, "Do you know how to train stick? ? "And yeah I do it. I always have a stick. One of my cars is a gear lever, which I love driving a lot.
The cars are just incredible to drive. It's one of those things you need to pay attention to because there is so much power available. And it's very entertaining. That being said, I hope we will have many more opportunities to drive the Ferrari.
So, are you a big guy in the car? You said, "One of my cars."
Well, I just like a fun car and the ordinary car. I like to drive a stick. My first car was a red Mazda RX-7 that my brother gave me. It was a change of stick, so I love sports cars.
The toys in this show are very nice and the location that doubles for the Robin Masters area is really beautiful.
Beautiful. Because Robin Masters Square, as designed, is bigger than anything you can find on the island, it's in the mountains. It's like two places we've restored to be Robin's Nest.
One of the changes for this show is that Higgins is a woman this time around. In addition, we did not talk about dogs. It's a homage to the original.
The Dobermans are here and they still hate Magnum and they like Higgins (Weeks Perdita), then this dynamic is there. But it's fun. Having Higgins be a woman throws in a different element and creates a different type of tension between Higgins and Magnum that was not in the original, of course.
It's a fun, new dynamic that feels a little cool. Perdita Weeks, who plays Higgins, is great. she really nails the character. So we had fun and she was always on me, and I have the impression that she likes to do it, which is good, I guess.
