Maine officials say a York County horse has been tested positive for mosquito-borne West Nile virus.

The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry said it was the first confirmed case of the disease in a horse.

The virus is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. The horse has not been vaccinated against the disease.

The animal had neurological signs last week. The department stated that it was undergoing veterinary support and that it was not threatening to infect other animals or people.
