PORTLAND, Maine – The University of Southern Maine was barred from teaching a retired professor who had organized a credit course for students to protest against Republican Senator Susan Collins in Washington while she was considering Brett Kavanaugh's candidacy for the Supreme Court.
University president Glenn Cummings said in a statement Wednesday that Dr. Susan Feiner has put in place "an unauthorized class that has advanced her personal political agenda," reported the Portland Press Herald. Feiner is not allowed to teach at the University of Southern Maine and on other campuses of the University of Maine.
Cummings says the "ephemeral course" has been hastily arranged without the provost knowing about it.
The university terminated the course and no school fund was used to fund the trip.
University spokesman Robert Stein said, "As far as we know," no students took part in the bus trip to Washington, DC "If students went there, it was uncredited. and by themselves, "he said.
Collins voted to confirm Kavanaugh.
As for Feiner, she does not intend to challenge the decision of the university. "I'm retired. It's the loss of USM, "she told the newspaper in a text message.
Maine GOP Executive Director Jason Savage praised the university's actions.
