The Major League Baseball Commissariat Political Action Committee has asked that his donation of $ 5,000 – the legal maximum – to Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi be returned. The contribution report of the Federal Election Commission was tabled on November 24th. The MLB faced an immediate reaction because of Hyde-Smith's controversial comments about his participation in a public hanging.

During the November 2 campaign, Hyde-Smith was photographed alongside one of his supporters telling him that if he ever invited her to attend a public hanging, she would sit in the front row. Many have taken the remark for inappropriate because of a history of racial violence in Mississippi.

On Sunday, a spokesperson for the MLB issued a statement, reported for the first time by Buster Olney from ESPN:

"The contribution was made as part of an event to which the MLB lobbyists were invited. The MLB requested that the contribution be returned."

In addition, Jon Heyman of Fancred reported that MLB's contribution had come before he was aware of Hyde-Smith's comments.

AT & T, Walmart and Pfizer have all asked the Hyde-Smith campaign to also return their contributions after it makes these comments. Hyde-Smith, a Republican, runs against Democrat Mike Espy in the second election on Tuesday for a seat in the US Senate. The candidates vie for the position of long-time Republican Senator Thad Cochran, whom Hyde-Smith was named to replace earlier this year, as his health forced him to step down.
