Organizers are expecting hundreds of people to take part in an annual walk over breast cancer in Topeka.
The American Cancer Society's Strides Against Breast Cancer 5-kilometer walk will begin at 9 am Saturday on the south grounds of the Statehouse, 300 S.W. 10th Ave.
Stephanie Weiter, spokeswoman for the American Cancer Society, said the fundraising walk is expected to attract local breast cancer survivors, caregivers, volunteers, and corporate and community members.
Weiter said the noncompetitive event is designed to raise awareness and generate funds for a world without breast cancer.
Last year, said Weiter, 400 participants raised $ 45,000 at the Topeka walk. Funds are used by the American Cancer Society to invest in groundbreaking research, provide free, comprehensive information and support to those affected by breast cancer, and help people take steps to reduce their breast cancer.
Since 1993, more than 14 million supporters have raised more than $ 870 million to help breast cancer through the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5-kilometer walks, which are held in over 200 communities across the nation.
According to the American Cancer Society, more than 266,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 and 40,920 will die from the disease this year. About 2,550 people are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year with 480 deaths.
Registration for the walk will begin at 8 am The event will be held rain or shine.
