It was impossible to watch the rookie match on Monday night without saying, "It's not even the same sport as the Eagles."
That match was an extreme example – the first game in NFL history in which both teams scored 50 points – but that's what the National League of Modern Football is.
The idea that you win with defense is no longer really true. The way the rules are written and the trend of the league, you win by accumulating a senseless number of points and holding your breath.
And this modern NFL leaves the Eagles behind.
They can not follow.
You observe the rams, the chiefs, and the saints, and they play a game different from that of the Eagles. In fact, these three teams have on average more points than the Eagles have scored all year.
The top five offenses in the league belong to five of the league's top teams. Traditional defensive powers such as the Steelers and Bears averaged nearly 30 points per game.

• Chefs (9-2) – Second (36.7)
• Steelers (7-2-1) – fourth (29.9)
• Bear (7-3) – fifth (29.4)
• Texans (7-3) – 16th (23.9)
• Chargers (7-3) – 10th (26.2)
There are 11 NFL teams with a winning record, and 10 of them are ranked in the top half of the league in scoring (all except the Redskins).
Defense? The chefs are 30th. The Rams are 28th. The saints are 15th. None of the top three defensive teams in the league have a winning record. Only five of the top 13 defensive teams have a winning record.
The teams that scare everyone right now are the Saints, the Chiefs and the Rams, simply because they are able to beat anyone.
Then there are the Eagles, who walk with an anachronistic 20.5 points per game.
They scored more than 24 goals once all year and they have an average of 20.5 and 19.2 at home.
Think about it: rams, saints and leaders score almost as many points in half as the Eagles score per game.
You can not compete like that. You can not compete when you can not generate piles of points in a hurry. You can not follow.
Now the Eagles will tell you that they are close. They earn yards but they just do not score. But they are only 19th in total yards. Just behind the Browns and the 49ers.
Every week, it seems that the Eagles have been left behind.
A year ago, this offense was explosive, unpredictable, dynamic, multiple and powerful. The Eagles could win by removing the teams, as in the playoffs against the Falcons, and during a shootout, as at the Super Bowl. Or they could do both, as in the NFC championship game against the Vikings.
On Sunday, the Eagles attack hit a new low, holding just seven points against a Saints defense that awarded nearly 30 points per game.
Currently, Howie Roseman, Joe Douglas and Doug Pederson are not in a good position to find healthy half-turners, effective passers or linebackers who play well, but they need it.
This is about finding a way to rebuild this attack to allow the Eagles to follow the best teams in the league.
It means finding explosive playmakers. So it's finding the best way to use the immense talent of Carson Wentz. It means rebuilding the old offensive line. It means getting guys who have the speed to play games in the field. This means knowing exactly how to incorporate an ongoing game into a modern NFL offense. It means putting in place an innovative, creative and aggressive coaching staff.
The teams score at will these days. The leaders scored 35 points seven times, Rams and Saints six times.
The Eagles had matches with 7, 17, 18, 20, 20, 21, 21, 23 and 24 points.
Heck, Frank Reich's Colts averaged 30 points per game in his first year as head coach, and they have gone 34-37-42-29-38 in their last five games.
The question is no longer how much Reig is missing from the Eagles, how much is a reconstruction project going to be able to play offensive football again at a high level?
Be able to compete against the best NFL teams and even be in the game.
The Eagles have good pieces in place. From week to week, it is becoming increasingly clear that they do not have enough.
