Ladies: Do something special for your health this month.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, with the exception of skin cancers. In the United States, about one in eight women will develop this type of cancer in their lifetime. It is also the second leading cause of death among women. For most women, mammography (X-rays of the breast) is the best way to screen for breast cancer at an early stage, when treatment is usually the most effective.

A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray of your breasts that can detect many changes that are too small or too deep to be felt. These simple mammary x-rays are quick, easy and safe. Mammograms use less radiation than the dentist's x-rays. As you get older, your chances of having breast cancer will increase. More than three-quarters of breast cancers occur in women age 50 and older.

It is recommended that you follow the guidelines for your age to decide when to have a mammogram.

• Women between the ages of 40 and 44 should have the option of starting annual mammography breast screening (breast x-rays) if they wish.

• Women aged 45 to 54 should have a mammogram each year.

• Women 55 years of age and older must undergo mammography every 2 years or may continue their annual screening.

• Screening should continue as long as a woman is healthy and must live another 10 years or more.

It is very important to talk to a health care provider about your breast cancer risk and the best screening plan for you.

You may also want to check with your insurance company how often they will pay for a mammogram.

Women should also know what their breasts look like and immediately report any breast changes to their doctor.

This month, be sure to remind all women in your life to plan a mammogram – your mother, sisters or daughters. It could save their lives!

Free or inexpensive mammograms are available for women who do not have health insurance. If you would like information on this, if you would like to know where to obtain mammograms or breast cancer information, please contact Four Corners Health at 1-877-337-3573 or local 402-362 -2621.
