A 44-year-old man from New Brunswick drowned while swimming at Jersey Shore on Saturday night.
His wife and young son watched from the beach as the first responders tried to save him, the police said.
Seaside Heights agents responded to a 911 call reporting a man hit by a wave and floating in the ocean off Fremont Avenue shortly after 7pm.
According to a press release issued by the police department, the responders saw the man face to face in the water, about 30 meters from the beach.
Three agents entered the water and reported strong tear currents. They were joined by water rescue units and the man was brought ashore.
Tri-Boro First Aid began CPR, but the man was declared dead on the scene.
The officials did not identify the victim.
Police chief Tommy Boyd told Asbury Park press that the wave may have broken the man's neck and made him unfit, but the official police statement did not specify his cause.
Hurricanes and dangerous surface currents have been reported along the New Jersey coast this weekend as a result of Hurricane Florence, which has now been downgraded to a tropical depression while it continues to hit the Carolinas.
The rescuers of Seaside Heights were not in use at the time. Their shifts are from 9h to 17h. weekends only until September 30th.
