Man fatally electrocuted after climbing to the top of a Yankee Stadium train: Gothamist

MTA officials say that a 24-year-old man died this week after being electrocuted by standing on top of a Metro-North train after a match between Yankees and Red Sox.

The incident occurred on Wednesday around 11 pm, when the victim, identified as Michael Vigeant, a resident of New Hampshire, and his brother left Yankee Stadium following the Yankees' victory over the Red Sox. They boarded a Metro-North train to New Haven when the train stopped between Larchmont and Mamaroneck stations due to a power failure around 11:30 pm.

Witnesses told LoHud that the brothers, who were dressed in Red Sox gear, then boarded the broken down train. A conductor apparently saw them and "caught" Vigeant's brother and brought him down safely. But Vigeant came into contact with catenary wires, was found by a member of the train crew and was transported to a local hospital where he died.

"Our sympathies go out to the family during this very difficult time. The incident is under investigation and we will publish additional information when it becomes available," said Nancy Gamerman, spokeswoman for Metro-North.

Stamford resident Michael Pellicci, who was also in the train, told the Daily Voice he saw the whole incident, saying that Vigeant and his brother had jumped on the train more than once. "We saw them and we wondered how they had arrived from one end of the train to the other so quickly," Pellicci told the Daily Voice. "That's when the leader understood what they were doing and stopped it was stupid.

Moments later, Pellicci saw a "thud and a spark of light", then watched Vigeant's body fall between the cars toward the back of the train. "You could see his body folded in two and a black arm," he added. "It was horrible." MTA officials say the train was stopped for about 45 minutes afterwards, but the riders said it was over two hours.

A Metro-North official added, "Although we do not know all the details of what happened, this incident brings home that any attempt to get on and off a car can be deadly."
