Conviction of false reviews sold to hundreds of host societies is a historic fraud decision

A TripAdvisor reviewer was sentenced to nine months in prison as part of a fraud court decision handed down by an Italian court.

The owner of Promo Salento has been found guilty of selling false reviews to hundreds of hotel companies in Italy in order to make them known on the site. He was also ordered to pay € 8,000 (£ 7,100).

The court in Lecce declared that the writing of false reviews under a false identity was a crime under Italian law.

TripAdvisor's own investigation began in 2015, when business leaders forwarded the letters they had received from Promo Salento with a view to writing fake notices against pay, in order to strengthen corporate profiles on the site. TripAdvisor staff has identified and blocked more than 1,000 Salento Promo attempts to publish reviews.

"The police investigation on Salento Promo has provided sufficient evidence of criminal behavior to send the case to court," said the US company in a statement.
