Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer played under Mourinho in Chelsea on his second stint.
He knows exactly what it's like to turn for the Special One and has lifted the veil on the puzzle games that he uses to get the most out of his team.
At Chelsea, especially in his debut, Mourinho has always supported his players in public.
Mourinho recently called some of his Manchester United stars, including Luke Shaw and Paul Pogba, in press conferences.
But Schwarzer says he "knows" that Mourinho handed Chelsea a stick – but the game went in camera because the players have always reacted positively.
While at United, Schwarzer thinks Mourinho is distributing public criticism because he does not get the desired response from the players he slams.
"One of the criticisms addressed to Jose Mourinho recently is that in Chelsea he has never publicly criticized any of his players," Schwarzer told Sky Sports.
"It was a different generation of players, and I know he would be looking for players in the locker room behind closed doors.
"But he would do it and get an answer, now in the last few years he was doing it in this fitting room and he was not getting an answer.
"He knows that they are capable, but he does not understand, that's why I think he's done it well." Maybe by doing it publicly, by putting more pressure on them, they will react in a positive way. " Some players can handle it. and some can not. "
But locker rooms are not new to the game.
Schwarzer also revealed how a former Chelsea boss had read the riot act to all players present on the club's training grounds – although he refused to specify the name of his responsible.
"When I was in Chelsea, we had a special moment on the change field where the manager came in, shot a chair and bypassed every player," he added.
"He gave a portion to the players who, in his opinion, needed it, and he swept away those who did not play enough.
"Me, he said" I like the way you train, you train well! "
"He searched Frank and told Frank Lampard to listen, you know that you play at the level you intend to play or that I expect you to play, so you have to get by".
"He went around everyone – including JT [John Terry] No one has been exempted from criticism.
"He also knew what the players could handle and which could not, even with some players he would give a little kick or a boost, just to show everyone that nobody is untouchable. "
