WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Lawyers Paul Manafort, former director of Donald Trump's presidential campaign, announced on Monday that they planned to appeal the decision of a US court judge. imprison Manafort while he was waiting for a criminal trial in Washington this fall.
Judge Amy Berman Jackson, of the District of Columbia, decided to send Manafort to prison after being charged with new criminal charges, that he allegedly manipulated witnesses while under house arrest.
Manafort's lawyers also announced Monday that they intended to appeal a decision made on April 27 by Jackson, dismissing a related civil suit that had challenged the scope of the case. Mueller's authority.
Manafort faces two indictments in Washington and Virginia stemming from Mueller's investigation into the potential collusion between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russia. His trial in Washington is scheduled for September.
Manafort pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy to launder money, bank and tax fraud and not to be registered as a foreign agent for the pro-Russian Ukrainian government.
He has been held in a jail in Virginia since Jackson revoked his bail on June 15 after prosecutors presented evidence at a hearing about Manafort's alleged efforts to influence the testimony of witnesses.
To date, Manafort has not prevailed in all efforts to dismiss the charges or remove evidence against him in the Washington case.
In April, when Jackson dismissed his civil suit challenging Mueller's authority, the judge found that the use of a civil case to challenge the criminal charges "is not the vehicle appropriate "to attack the actions of prosecutors.
