Meanwhile, the US Navy sends nearly 30 of its ships based in Virginia.
Navy spokeswoman Alana Garas said the ships would land on Monday from naval bases, including the world's largest in Norfolk. Ships will head to parts of the Atlantic where they will be able to avoid the storm.
Some ships will stay back because they are in maintenance and can be tied with additional mooring lines and storm.
Meanwhile, naval bases near the coast of Virginia are also drying out flood prone areas and fueling fuel generators.
Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said Florence should be an extremely dangerous storm as it approaches the coast of South Carolina or North Carolina on Thursday.
