Polk County will be one of the counties responsible for the mandatory sampling of deer caught during chronic wasting disease this weekend.
The Missouri Department of Conservation conducts samplings in 31 of the 48 counties of its MDC Management Zone during the opening weekend of the fall deer season, the November 10 and 11, according to a press release from the MDC.
The other counties involved are: Adair, Barry, Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Cedar, Cole, Crawford, Franklin, Grundy, Hickory, Jefferson, Knox, Linn, Macon, Madison, McDonald's, Mercer, Moniteau, Ozark, Perry, Putnam, St Charles. , St. Clair, St. Francis, Ste. Genevieve, Stone, Sullivan, Taney, Warren and Washington.
Hunters harvesting deer in these counties on November 10 and 11 must take their deer – or head with at least 6 inches of neck in place – on the day of harvest at one of the 61 MDC mandatory sampling stations. said the statement. Deer may be shown at any required sampling to obtain free test results.

The MDC encourages hunters to properly kill deer carcasses to limit the spread of the disease. MDC also encourages hunters to share the harvest and follow special guidelines when they share a deer harvested in a county where CWD has been discovered. CWD is an infectious and deadly disease for white-tailed deer and other members of the deer family, known as cervids. There have been no known cases of CWD infection, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly recommend testing the deer for this disease if it is harvested an area known to have cases of the disease. The CDC also recommends not to consume meat from animals whose diagnostic test for CWD is positive, which is rare in Missouri with 76 confirmed cases in free-ranging deer since the disease was discovered to the first time in free deer in 2012.
