A week-long manhunt ended Thursday morning for Kirby Wallace, the 53-year-old suspect who, according to authorities, killed two people and wounded a third during crimes committed. in two separate homes in Middle Tennessee, officials said.

Just before 10:30 am, the Tennessee Investigation Office announced that Kirby – who had been in office for seven days – was in custody.

Early Friday morning, after a "credible sighting" by Kirby Wallace in Stewart County, the search area was relocated from Montgomery County to Stewart County.

The authorities said Wallace was seen hiding behind a chicken pen on a family's property in Indian Mound.

Mitchell Allen said that shortly after dark, his neighbor had sighted a man located a hundred yards from Allen's home, in the 100 block of Wild Creek Road.

"He was squatting next to a hen behind a truck," Allen told The Leaf-Chronicle newspaper.

Allen's family was asked to stay in the house while a SWAT team had searched Allen's garage, his father's barn and his grandmother's shed. They cleared these areas and several helicopters and agents searched the area.

The Cumberland City ferry was closed until further notice and all Montgomery County roads were opened later in the morning.

The authorities were looking for the alleged murder suspect, 53-year-old Kirby Gene Wallace, one of the most wanted fugitives among TBI's top 10 most wanted folks.

Wallace was considered armed and dangerous. Authorities conducted research near Cumberland City Road and Frankie Road and on Thursday, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said more than 400 tips were called in the county's 911 center.

On Thursday, the reward for the information that led to his capture reached $ 20,000, and more than 400 tips were received during the search.

The authorities had asked residents to remain vigilant, lock windows and doors and report any suspicious activity. The Tennessee Road Patrol is advised residents not to try to confront Wallace, but to call 911 and wait for the police to arrive.

Wallace is wanted for first degree murder, murder for crime, serious arson, especially skilled kidnapping, including robbery, including burglary and theft of property.

Kirby Wallace's biggest lead is looking for days

On Wednesday, Stan Hembree, who lives in the Woodlawn area, found a dry sleeping bag and blanket on his property while conducting a perimeter check with the authorities.

He said the authorities had told him that it was one of their best tracks so far.

For Hembree, this was a disturbing development in a saga that he wished it was already over. "He just needs to surrender," he said about Wallace.

Despite a massive human hunt that brought together more than 100 law enforcement officers and many K-9s, Montgomery and Stewart counties remained vigilant in Wallace's search.

Gray said the authorities thought Wallace was "hiding" somewhere in Stewart County on Friday and asked the community to report any suspicious activity or sighting by calling 911.

Schools in Stewart County were locked out while the suspect was still on the run.

Two school bus routes – # 6 and # 35 – were canceled on Friday as the hunt continued.

MPs were escorting school buses on routes through the Indian Mound area and monitoring children, the Stewart County Sheriff's Department reported.

The last victim of Wallace

Gray said a man had been found shot dead Monday, with his truck stolen, in Wallace's search area in Montgomery County.

The man, whose identity was not revealed, was found at the corner of Poplar Springs Road and Welker Road.

This man's truck, Ford, was stolen. Wallace was later seen driving the truck, said Montgomery County Sheriff's spokeswoman Sandra Brandon.

TBI said Monday morning that the truck had been found and that they thought Wallace was walking in the vicinity of Cumberland City Road and Frankie Road.

The first attack

Just a day earlier, the authorities said that Wallace had attacked a couple and set their house on fire, killing the woman and seriously injuring her husband.

Gray said Brenda Smith, 63, and her husband, Teddy Smith, returned home Sunday to find a person at their home on Rorie Hollow Road. Gray said the couple was linked and the house was burned down.

The woman's husband, who managed to escape the house, was taken to Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville, where he continues to be treated Monday.

Neighbor Steve Downs of Indian Mound said that the woman's arms were tied with what appeared to be an electric wire.

"She was already dead," when they pulled her up the hill, "said Downs.
