Many changes in the Ryder Cup in over 25 years and Americans are asking for more

This year, Furyk and European Captain Thomas Bjorn each have five assistant captains, many of whom, although not competing, are here with their own caddies. Aged 54, Love is in an assistant role after being captain in 2016, when the Americans won at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota.

The modern success of the Ryder Cup is based on a strong rivalry, but not really between Europe and the United States, which is not a classic sporting rallying point. The rivalry was the European Tour against the most lucrative PGA Tour, based in the United States.

This lifestyle gap was a driving force for Europeans and made their domination of the event in the 2000s all the more counter-intuitive. But the lines of demarcation between the teams have long since become blurred, with Europe having most often joined the American tour. In this era of globalization, Irish star Rory McIlroy knows American games and characters better than some of her European teammates.

In 1993, the Ryder Cup seemed to be a real shock of golf cultures instead of a reshuffle of the bridge. But that does not mean that the end of the drought in the United States would not resonate, especially for those who have lived the longest.

Phil Mickelson, then fresh out of Arizona State University, was a candidate for a captain's choice in 1993, but was not chosen by Watson. His first Ryder Cup took place in 1995, and he has not missed one since, winning 0-5 on the road and losing to Spain, England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

Could France be where the series stops?

"If we had to do it," said Mickelson, "it would be something that I would remember and cherish for the rest of my life."
