The Alzheimer's Association invites residents of Lincoln to join the Walk to End Alzheimer's Disease on Sunday, Sept. 16, at Holmes Lake, 70th and Normal.

Participants will complete a 2-mile walk to learn about Alzheimer's disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical research, and support programs and services offered by the Alzheimer Society. Walkers will also join a tribute ceremony in honor of people with Alzheimer's disease.

Alyssa Rhoades, a resident of Lincoln, walks in honor of her grandmother who was diagnosed in early 2017. Alyssa says this of her journey with Alzheimer's disease: "As we continue our trip, we find ourselves frustrated answering – a lot of guessing and checking. I walk to get answers to my questions and find a cure!

In addition to the 2-mile walk, attendees will enjoy performances, free Runza food and interaction with the following sponsors: Runza, CountryHouse Residence, Alpha Media – KFOR, KLKN Channel 8, Sigma Kappa Sorority The Arbors , among others.

More than 5 million Americans live with Alzheimer's disease, the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and the only one of the top 10 causes that can not be cured, prevented or even slowed down. In addition, more than 15 million family members and friends provide care to people with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias in the United States. In Nebraska alone, more than 34,000 people are living with the disease and 82,000 are caregivers.
