COUNTY OF ALBEMARLE, Va. (WVIR) –

On the eve of Veterans Day, tens of thousands of US Marines around the world are celebrating the 243rd anniversary of the Corps on Saturday night.

A group of Marines from the community of Charlottesville and surrounding areas celebrated their party in Keswick on Saturday, November 10th. The soldiers enjoyed a traditional cake for their birthday and had the chance to meet their old friends.

"The goal is for all Marines to come together to celebrate our Body, our history, our traditions and what we have accomplished, and to gather as friends," said Colonel James O'Kelley, US Marine Corps.

Saturday's event kicked off the group's annual Toys for Tots campaign. Community members were encouraged to bring new toys to the event, which will then be given to children in need.

The participants also took part in a silent auction, during which the proceeds will go to help the distressed Marines of the community.

The Marines will continue their celebrations Sunday by paying tribute to all veterans.

American Legion Post 74 will hold its ceremony in the Albemarle County Office Building at 2:30 pm on Sunday, November 11th.
