Fears of seeing the old Tappan Zee Bridge collapse caused the closure of the entire river under the bridge and the opening of a new span of the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge on Friday night.
Engineers working on the bridge discovered that a section of the old bridge was "weakened" on Friday, said Steve Stohmaier, an officer of the USCG.
He said that this could cause a potential problem if it collapsed in the river.
The discovery saw the entire Hudson River under the Tappan Zee and Mario Cuomo bridges closed to shipping traffic around midnight, officials said.
The planned opening of the second span of the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge has also been delayed due to fears of collapse.
"Continuing the dismantling of former Tappan Zee Brige last night, a potentially dangerous situation has occurred where a piece of the old bridge has been destabilized and could fall," said Matthew Driscoll, spokesperson for the Authority. Thruway.
"Given the proximity of the new span completed, motorists will remain in the current traffic configuration until abandoning a thorough assessment by Tappan Zee Constructors," he said. .
The second period "is complete and ready to open to traffic as soon as the Thruway Authority is assured that there is no risk to the new scope," he added.
The traffic to Westchester was supposed to go to the second span of Governor Mario M. Cuomo's bridge for the night of Friday.
