Maroon 5 will star in the half-time show at the upcoming 2019 Super Bowl, a source at PEOPLE confirms. In response to the news – confirmed by several outlets, including Variety and Display panel – the NFL issued a statement.

"It's a Super Bowl tradition to speculate on artists for the Pepsi half-time show," reads. "We continue to work with [longtime sponsor] Pepsi on our plans but we have no announcement to make on what will be another epic show.

When they were contacted by PEOPLE, a representative of Maroon 5 did not comment on the news.

This would be the first performance of the group at the Super Bowl. Last year, Justin Timberlake (for the second time) and 2017 was Lady Gaga. Other big names that have taken the stage in recent years include Beyoncé, Coldplay, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz.

Maroon 5 is entering a "new phase" of his career, keyboardist Jesse Carmichael recently told PEOPLE.

"We used all this equipment when we were kids, working hard to establish ourselves as a group," Carmichael said. "We need to eliminate what we no longer use to make room for the equipment that will help us create what will follow. This equipment has played a very important role in our history and I hope it will go to a group or promising musicians who will be able to incorporate it into their own story.
