Mars will arrive near Earth, the closest in 15 years, in about two weeks.
Earth and Mars will be 35.8 million miles from each other on July 30. The closest of the two planets were 34.6 million in 2003.
In honor of the historic moment, Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles will host an audience viewing event for free. If time permits, the observatory will be equipped with telescopes and astronomers available for the big night.
Mars will approach the Earth's atmosphere between 10pm. Monday, July 30 and 1:30 on Tuesday, July 31. The highlight of the closest is at 12:45. The observatory says that next time it will be in the same distance will not be before September 11, 2035.
The Griffith Observatory is located at 2800 E. Observatory Rd., Los Angeles . People who can not visit the observatory can also watch the event in a live stream. Learn more about the event here.
