Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton revealed Monday night that she and Shannon Kelley had divorced after 27 years of marriage.
Appearing in "Dancing With the Stars," said Retton, "I am going through a divorce. People do not know it. This is the first time I say it in public. "
The news of the February divorce was first reported by People magazine, which received an exclusive "sneak preview" video.
Retton married Shannon Kelley in 1990. He is an assistant head coach at Houston Baptist University. The couple has four girls.
Retton said that she and Kelley had separated amicably. "It's something that really had to happen a long time ago," she said. "We still love each other, but we were no longer good together."
She added that her daughters had helped her during the divorce.
"Thank God for my four daughters," said Retton, who won the gold medal in gymnastics at the 1984 Summer Olympics. "They loved me unconditionally."
Later in the show "Dancing With the Stars", Retton faced another end when she and her dance partner, Sasha Farber, were eliminated from the competition.
