ANNAPOLIS, Maryland – Maryland House Speaker Michael Busch underwent coronary bypass surgery.

The speaker's office made the announcement on Thursday. The Busch office stated that the presenter had undergone bypass surgery around 7 pm Wednesday.

The speaker's office stated, "He is awake, alert, and is expected to recover fully.

Busch was at the Medical Center at the University of Maryland on Wednesday for a routine test. He was suffering from shortness of breath, so the doctors recommended additional tests to determine the cause and he was operated on thereafter.

Busch, 71, had a liver transplant last year after being diagnosed with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Busch is the oldest lecturer in the history of Maryland.
