Since returning to campus after yesterday's press conference, I met with the leaders of the Student Government Association, who spoke on behalf of many student organizations. the executive committee of the Senate; deans; department heads; and campus management. The overwhelming majority of stakeholders expressed serious concerns about DJ Durkin's return to campus.The President of the Board of Regents publicly acknowledged that I had already expressed serious concerns about the return of Coach Durkin. This does not reflect my opinion of the coach Durkin as a person. However, a departure is in the interest of the University and this afternoon, Coach Durkin was informed that the University would separate.
It's a hard decision to make, but it's the right one for our entire university. I will dedicate the last months of my presidency to advancing the necessary reforms in our sports department, which give priority to the safety and well-being of our student-athletes.

The university does not dismiss Durkin with reason, according to Rick Maese. Instead, the school will buy Durkin out of his remaining contract.
Matt Canada, who led the Terps to a 5-3 record in the absence of Durkin, will remain the interim head coach.
