WAKEFIELD, Mass. – A major fire destroyed an almost 150-year-old church in Wakefield, just outside of Boston.
A group was meeting inside the first Baptist church when the fire was reported around 7 pm. Tuesday, but they did well.
Wakefield Fire Chief Michael Sullivan said more than 100 firefighters from more than two dozen communities fought the fire for about three hours. Firefighters stayed on the scene overnight, avoiding hot spots.
Three firefighters were injured and were treated on the spot.
Sullivan says the church, which has a 180-foot spire, is a total loss.
The cause remains under study but it seems like a love at first sight.
On his website, the church said "we praise Jesus for the safety of our ecclesial community" and thanked the firefighters for their efforts.
