Broad lines are expected on Tuesday when Massachusetts opens its first two marijuana stores in Northampton and Leicester.

The state will become the seventh in the United States to allow adults over 21 to buy pot for recreational use and the first state to do so. Both stores will operate as regulated and taxable businesses with a license.

Cultivate Holdings, the Leicester store, will open Tuesday at 8 am and the Northampton store, New England Treatment Access, will do the same.

Those who are going to farm will have to park at the Everlast Nursery, located at 1894 Main Street. There, guests can take a shuttle to the clinic. Medical patients will still be able to park on site, according to Cultivate President Sam Barber.

Credit cards will not be accepted at Cultivate, but cash and debit terminals will be available. Medical patients will have dedicated lines and terminals so that their transactions can be done quickly.

"This has had a positive impact on the entire community," said Barber. "This product really helps people. There is such a large amount of tax revenue that the state will create from a market that has always been there. Now we have to make sure this product is regulated."

The voters of Massachusetts chose to legalize the recreational use of marijuana in 2016, but it took more than two years for the authorities to determine where the first stores could open. Originally, retail sales were scheduled to begin July 1 st.

Consumers over the age of 21 with a valid ID will be able to buy an ounce of marijuana at licensed stores or clinics. A maximum of five grams will be allowed to sell in concentrate form and the public use of the pot is prohibited.

Adults who buy marijuana products should have it closed in a container and stored in the trunk of a vehicle or in the glove box when traveling with them. They can have up to one ounce at a time and up to 10 ounces at home.
