SANTA CLARA – The 49ers will raise coach quarterback Nick Mullens as a backup for C.J. Beathard after Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a knee injury late in the season on Sunday.

The 49ers will also bring a group of free-agent quarterbacks to train on Tuesday, said coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday.

"I know we are working a number of guys tomorrow," Shanahan said. "Right now, our plan is to get Nick, so we have two right now.

The group of quarterbacks to coach for the 49ers includes veteran free agents, Kellen Clemens, T.J. Yates and Tom Savage. Shanahan said the team had also contacted Matt Moore, but the coach said he was not sure the QB would attend the training session.

A player who will not be training is Colin Kaepernick, said Shanahan. He said the team had not discussed Kaepernick this year after being talked about a year ago.

"I made this decision [to not pursue Kaepernick] because of the style of offensive we wanted to follow, "said Shanahan. "That's what I said last year. It's the same situation now. I always look into what type of offense I want to do, what kind of offense we have been committing for two years.

"When you start going to these quarters, we talk about our guy, C.J., and we have Nick Mullens' support. When you enter a third or fourth guy, whoever you are, you would like to bring in guys who you think would not have to change a lot of your offense. "

Garoppolo must undergo surgery to repair his left torn ACL at some point in the next two weeks after his swelling has decreased. Shanahan said he was not aware of any additional damage to Garoppolo's knee.

Clemens, 35, is a veteran of the NFL for 12 years. He has started 21 of his career games over the course of his career with the New York Jets, St. Louis Rams and Chargers. He has 16 career touchdowns and 21 steals.

Yates, 31, has started 10 of 20 games in which he has appeared with the Houston Texans, Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins. He has 10 TD passes and 11 steals.

Savage, 28, has started nine of his 13 games with the Texans. He made five TD passes and seven interceptions.

Moore, 34, is a 10-year-old professional who began his career in 49 games with the Carolina Panthers and Dolphins. He launched 45 TD passes and 31 interceptions.
