San Francisco mayor, London Breed, is expected to play a more active role in the ongoing strike involving some 7,500 employees at major hotels and offered to meet Unite Here Local 2 union leaders.
"We hope that with increased public support, Marriott will be encouraged to take the measures that are required," said Rachel Gumpert, spokeswoman for the San Francisco Local Unite Here, tonight.
Such a meeting could be held next week, Breed's office said Friday.
Mr. Gumpert said that about 7,500 people had quit work in the past 10 days at US Marriott hotels. About one-third of these strikers work in hotels in San Francisco, she said.
Strikers are looking for a salary high enough to not have to work more than one job to keep living in San Francisco and the nearby cities.
The strikers have been protesting noisily since their departure from work.
"We continue to benefit from remarkable support for the strikers," said Gumpert tonight.
Forty-one strikers in front of the Marriott Marquis Hotel at Mission and Fourth Streets were arrested Friday night while they were blocking Fourth Street to demonstrate their civil disobedience.
A message left at Mayor Breed's press office tonight was not returned, nor was a message with a Marriott spokesperson asking for comments.
