The Texans have a five-game winning streak and a 5-3 record before Sunday's game in Denver. Receiver Demaryius Thomas, acquired from the Broncos this week for a fourth-round pick and a seventh-round pick choice, will be honored at the game.
The Texans are in first place in the AFC South and the Broncos are their last opponent before the opening date. One of the best things about this game is to watch Quarterback Case Keenum play against his former team for the first time.
Based on your questions this week, you'll be interested in Thomas, Keenum, Deshaun Watson and more, as the Texans attempt to extend their winning streak to six games.
Do not forget that I would like to hear from you every week. Your comments and questions are welcome. Send them to [email protected], and do not forget to put "mailbag" in the subject line. You can also tweet them to me on Twitter @McClain_on_NFL using #askmcclain.
I await your questions and comments that will be posted every Friday morning at Texas Sports Nation, available to subscribers of the Houston Chronicle.
Q: How do you think the Keenum case will stand up against Texans' defense given our injuries in high school? – Rick T.
A: It depends on whether the Broncos can run the ball well, keep Keenum out of long distance situations and keep him away from J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney. The Broncos are 3-5. Keenum has 10 touchdowns and 10 steals. They had trouble in the red zone. This is his first game against his former team, and knowing how competitive and motivated he is, I think he will play a good game.
Q: How do you think Demaryius Thomas will fit into the Texans offensive against DeAndre Hopkins? – Tony S.
A: Check out Sunday's column, Tony. My colleague Aaron Wilson is telling a story about it. Without Will Fuller, I think Hopkins will be more targeted. I think once Thomas has determined the offensive, it will have been worth it because he will have a lot of individual coverage and will be able to take advantage of it. Hopkins welcomed this trade. With Thomas, whose 36 catches would be second on the Texans, Hopkins will have a receiver on the other side that can help divert strategic attention from his side of the field.
Q: Why do not Texans have a game or two for quarterback Joe Webb's third team? It seems that two mobile types that can launch would be dangerous near the goal line. – Leo C.
A: It's an interesting question, Leo. Webb is active on matchdays because he plays well with special teams and not because he's a precise passer. If he played, the defense would wait for a turn. Watson plays very well, and they do not need Webb. They have scored six touchdowns in the red zone in the last two games.
Q: Will Watson be able to travel with the team to Denver or will he have to take the bus again? – Hector G.
A: When you have a partially collapsed lung, you can not fly for at least two weeks. He suffered the injury against Dallas. Bill O'Brien confirmed Monday that Watson would be able to accompany the team to the Denver match.
Q: How come a QB like John Elway had so much trouble writing quarterbacks? – David D.
A: It's a good question that many are asking. The best answer I heard is from Elway in search of John Elway. He struggled to make draft picks for this position and he is not shy to admit it. He also said his lack of success in selecting quarterbacks would not stop him.
Q: What is your biggest memory of a Houston team playing in Denver? – Roland J.
A: The 1991 AFC Divisional Game at Mile High Stadium, Roland. Warren Moon led the Oilers to a 21-13 lead at half-time and 24-16 in the fourth quarter. The Oilers led 24-23 with 2:07 to go in the game. John Elway got the ball at his 2, converted two assists in the fourth quarter on his 7-yard run and a 44-yard pass to Vance Johnson and placed them in an investment attempt on the 28-yard 16-second pitch. the end. The session was bad, but the holder – a substitute quarterback named Gary Kubiak – did a great job getting the ball for the referee who won the match, David Treadwell. Subsequently, Elway called this race a more successful career, as it would validate "The Drive" in Cleveland.
Q: After watching (DeAndre) Hopkins play Thursday night at football against Miami, I have one more question: Is Nuk the best wide receiver in the team's history? – Nick B.
A: Hopkins has been outstanding this season, Nick. I think he's playing better than any NFL receiver. But this is his sixth season and I'm not ready to say he's better than Andre Johnson, who played 12 seasons with the Texans and is the first player in the Ring of Honor of the 'team.
Q: Given current results, do you think Greg Mancz should stay on guard right? – Joe T.
A: Mancz has played in the last two games in the place of injured Zach Fulton, an injured ankle. I had asked Bill O'Brien this question this week, and his answer was that Fulton was "day-to-day" and that Mancz had played well. I think when Fulton gets 100% he will be back in training, but I do not think it will be against the Broncos.
