(Editor's note: Updated Thursday, September 20, 2018, at 10:45 pm Eastern Time, to reflect corrected information in the source's story, McGregor's contract provides for six fights, not eight.)
In the wake of UFC 229's pre-event press conference in New York, Conor McGregor reached an agreement with the UFC.
ESPN.com said UFC President Dana White has confirmed a new six-contract deal for McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC), which will face next month the lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov (26-0 MMA, 10-0 UFC). what the promotion praises as the biggest fight of its long history.
Although the terms of the agreement were not disclosed, ESPN said the deal provides for a clean No.12 presence as a sponsor for each card McGregor fights on. Own Issue 12 is McGregor's recently launched brand of whiskey, and he has touted it prominently at today's press conference at Radio City Music Hall, where he confirmed, just as White, that whiskey would sponsor UFC 229.
UFC 229 will take place on October 6th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card is broadcast on the pay-TV channels after the preliminaries on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass. White told ESPN that the buyout of UFC 229 could reach 2.5 million. The current record would be 1.6 million purchases for the McGregor UFC 202 rematch with Nate Diaz in 2016 – although the UFC does not officially publish its numbers à la carte.
ESPN's Darren Rovell, who reported the news, wrote about Twitter McGregor's new contract does not include any boxing rights.
McGregor has not fought at the UFC since November 2016. His only action was a mega-boxing match against Floyd Mayweather in August 2017 that would have brought him nearly $ 100 million.
When McGregor won the lightweight title against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in New York. At the time, he became the first fighter in the history of the UFC to hold two titles simultaneously. the 155-pound belt went with its featherweight title. Shortly after, McGregor was stripped of his featherweight belt for not defending him and, earlier this year, he was deprived of the lightweight title for the same reason.
That's how Nurmagomedov won after defeating Al Iaquinta at UFC 223 in Brooklyn in February. And it was during this event that McGregor was introduced with members of his team and his entourage, and the Irishman launched a wagon into the window of a bus that contained many fighters from UFC 223, including Nurmagomedov and his team.
In the aftermath of this now infamous incident, McGregor and a teammate were arrested and charged with numerous crimes. Earlier this year, McGregor pleaded guilty to less serious charges to avoid jail time. But he is still struggling with the consequences of this situation, including a civil suit by UFC fighter, Michael Chiesa, who was injured in the bus incident and had to be removed from his fight on the map.
McGregor referred to the bus incident several times during today's press conference, including saying that if the bus door had opened, he would have killed Nurmagomedov and would be in prison rather than at of the press conference.
