According to the McHenry County Department of Health, heavy rains have contributed to the increase in the population of nuisance mosquitoes around McHenry County.
"Many of the mosquitoes we see now are harmful mosquitoes of all heavy rains," said health department spokeswoman Keri Zaleski.
The county does not track the number of harmful mosquitoes that do not carry human diseases. West Nile virus has been reported in about a dozen traps this summer, Zaleski said.
"We have mosquito traps throughout the county," Zaleski said.
According to county data, the most recent mosquito pool collected by the county and tested positive for West Nile virus was tested on Sept. 11 from a Spring Grove trap.
Zaleski encouraged local residents to make sure there is no stagnant water on their properties. Zaleski said each municipality is responsible for treating mosquitoes.

"We have a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday, and a 60% chance on Wednesday," said Ben Deubelbeiss, meteorologist at the Romeoville National Meteorological Service.
McHenry Mayor Wayne Jett said Monday night in a message that the city was waiting after the rain because it would cancel the impact.
"The cost of spraying in town is about $ 10,000 and I would hate to waste that money," Jett said on Facebook.
