AGUILA, AZ – Teams from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office have rescued a man stuck in a mine shaft in western Arizona since Monday.
According to the MCSO, the man fell into the well 100 feet deep on Monday but was not located until Wednesday. His friend found him in the Eagle Eye Road area and milepost 13, about 35 minutes south of Aguila.
John Waddell, 62, spent 48 hours without food or water and broke several bones. He was flown in from the scene to be treated for life-threatening injuries.
"He has both artificial knees. One of them is messed up, "said friend Terry Shrader.
Despite the surrounding cautionary signs, Waddell was alone when he fell on Monday in the pit of a gold mine of a depth of 100 feet.
"The carabiner has broken, I suppose, and it is supposed to have fallen between 20 and 20 meters," Shrader said.
Shrader has been a friend and neighbor of Waddell for eight years. It's a pact that saved the life of Waddell.
"He called me on Monday and told me that he was coming to the mine. And we have always had an agreement, though it's not back on Tuesday [to come check on him.]. "
Waddell never came back and Shrader had a bad feeling.
"Since he did not come back yesterday, I was determined to come here today," he said, expressing his guilt that he had not checked earlier.
His fear has been confirmed.
"When I took out my truck, I heard it screaming. Help! "
Shrader quickly left the desert to be served.
"I've had enough [service] that the deputies were on their way, "he said.
The mountain rescue team has also come. The team of more than a dozen people hung hundreds of feet of rope, created a pulley system and worked more than six hours to get Waddell out.
"I did some rescues, but never anything like that," Shrader said.
Despite Waddell's cries of pain once, he was removed.
"It's a tough guy," said Shrader.
It took hours, but rescuers pulled out a 62-year-old father from a 100-foot gold mine tonight.
He fell on Monday and was trapped for 48 hours before a friend watched him.

The victim who was rescued from the mine today was flown to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. He is a man in his sixties and we are looking forward to his recovery. Excellent result today with all the partners of the MCSO and the law enforcement.
