The number of measles cases in Rockland County is increasing.
There are now 25 confirmed cases of measles and eight other suspected cases. Health officials expect this number to continue to increase.
The outbreak began after five people traveled to Israel and were infected. In just one month, another 20 people contracted measles in the area.
According to Dr. Patricia Schabel Ruppert, Commissioner responsible for Rockland Health, more children than adults have contracted this life-threatening disease. There is also an order stopping children who are not safe from attending classes.
"We exclude only children from schools where there was an exhibition in their school," she says.
Health officials say all schools should have a list of unvaccinated students to prepare for potential exposures in their school. They urge the public to know if they have received the MMR vaccine.
So far, more than 2,000 people in Rockland have been vaccinated since the end of September when the measles outbreak hit the region. The Department of Health hopes that more people will be vaccinated to prevent the spread of the virus. He is organizing a free vaccination clinic next week.
