CLARKSTOWN, NY – New York State officials have confirmed 68 cases of measles in a county, making it the largest outbreak of this type in the state for decades .
The News News reports that the Rockland County outbreak was caused by three groups of travelers from Israel and that it mainly affected Orthodox Jewish residents of New Square, Monsey and Spring Valley. .
Israel is currently experiencing a measles outbreak with more than 1,500 confirmed cases and the death of a child.
Health officials in Rockland said the affected patients were a mix of adults, teenagers and children. County officials monitor schools to ensure that unvaccinated children do not go to school.
Measles is a very contagious disease. Symptoms include high fever, cough, rash and red, watery eyes.
The last largest measles outbreak in the state took place in 2013 with 58 confirmed cases.
