WARSAW, Poland – Polish health authorities are calling on people to get vaccinated and vaccinate their children after the announcement of measles cases in the Warsaw region.

Health Minister Lukasz Szumowski said 17 recent cases of measles in the province of Mazovia were all due to the inability of parents to vaccinate their children.

The World Health Organization has reported tens of thousands of measles cases in Europe.

At a press conference Sunday, Szumowski and other health officials pointed out that measles immunization was safe.

Measles is a highly contagious disease and WHO says it is one of the leading causes of death among young children worldwide. It's easy to prevent with a vaccine.
