Members of the Gruden team led by a guy who doubted Von Miller

The Raiders started 0-2 and there are serious concerns about how things are handled in Oakland while the Jon Gruden era continues to debut in a questionable manner. Indeed, there may even be a "cleavage" in the organization regarding player screening and management of personnel issues.

According to a lengthy analysis of Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Gruden's approach, which reflects how he prepared for games while working for ESPN on Monday night, "led to a disconnection of Raiders" between Gruden guys the office people who were up previously under GM Reggie McKenzie.

Basically, Gruden came in and hired a new staff.

More on the NFL

Gruden "essentially has his own staff that helps him judge talents and make decisions – including the confidant and director of football research, Dave Razzano – as well as a large number of trainees and assistants", according to Rapoport.

Razzano, Rapoport note, was a long-time scout in the NFL, who became a "scout scout" on Twitter and shared various opinions about potential choices in 2011, now looks dubious.

Notably, Razzano complained of the "lack of effort" of Von Miller, who turned himself into an eternal defensive player of the year.

Yes, there seems to be a clear division between the guys who are Gruden guys and those guys from McKenzie.

For Rapoport, those who grew up under McKenzie are "frustrated that Gruden has his guys, who form a group that has led the signing of several veteran free agents, the dropping of several draft picks and the Khalil Mack deal."

There is MUCH of public sniping on the Mack trade, Gruden noting that he had nothing to do with sending a second round (2020) to the Bears with Mack in the deal. McKenzie made it clear that he was not interested in doing business with Mack at all, even though he had been on the road talking publicly.

It was already hard to imagine McKenzie in 2018, but when you read the details about the Raiders events, it is really hard to imagine a scenario where this malfunction would continue in 2019.
