MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) – About 10,000 spectators have stayed at the Miami marathon against Tennessee.
Lightning imposed two delays of about two hours each Sunday, and it took more than seven hours for Miami to win a 27-20 victory.
"Enjoy all the Dolphins fans coming out tonight," shouted quarterback Ryan Tannehill on camera as he headed for the locker room. "Win No. 1, baby."
That was it. Here are some things to know about an opening match that was memorable for the Dolphins and expensive for the Titans:
HEAVY TOLL: The Titans have lost quarterback Marcus Mariota, forward Taylor Lewan, fin Delanie Walker and cornerback Adoree Jackson following injuries.
Mariota injured his elbow throwing in the third quarter, left the game for a game, returned to launch two interceptions and left for good.
"I could not feel my fingers, feel my hand," said Mariota. "It was one of those things – could not grab the ball."
Blaine Gabbert replaced Mariota.
"It's just time," said Gabbert. "It's the quarterback job description: be ready at any time, get in and help your team win the game."
Gabbert did not do it, passing 11 for 22 for 117 yards and an interception that sealed the win for Miami. He will be more aware if he is in the lineup for Sunday's home game against Houston.
Lewan left the match with a concussion. Walker was removed from the field later in the period with a right leg injury. Jackson is injured in the shoulder on a 26-yard return.
FRACAS: Lewan appeared to be briefly eliminated when he was knocked down on the plane block at the back of André Branch during an interception return by Reshad Jones. Lewan lay on the lawn, then stood up abruptly and the players exchanged words and blows.
Jordan Phillips and Bobby McCain of Miami and Dion Lewis of Tennessee received non-driving penalties
"There were a lot of words being said," said McCain, "and I do not think you can write them."
FIGHT: Tannehill hopes to perform better on the Jets in New York. Back from knee surgery, he played for the first time in 21 months with mixed results.
Tannehill launched two interceptions and the Dolphins found themselves empty twice on possessions inside Tennessee.
"I was not as keen as I would like," he said.
Still, Tannehill had 20 yards out of 28 for 230 yards and sent Kenny Stills two touchdowns.
BIG PLAYS: The dolphins accelerated in the fourth quarter. Jakeem Grant scored on a 102-yard punt return, Stills picked up a 75-yard touchdown pass and Jones made his second interception of the game 54 yards.
"You have three or four guys who are burners," Tannehill said. "It's very fun to play with them."
ANTHEM: Colin Kaepernick, a leader of the protest movement of NFL players against social injustice, tweeted his support after the recipients of Dolphins Stills and Albert Wilson knelt during the national anthem.
"I know he's got our backs," Stills said. "Really, there was a huge difference between when we started demonstrating and now. Many people help and appreciate us a lot. Thank you all for your presence, thank you for your positivity. Let's continue to do our best to make positive changes and have those conversations and make our country better.
