The No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide football team celebrated a 29-0 victory over the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge last Saturday, but one Alabama fan’s family is now mourning after a bar fight left the Crimson Tide supporter dead.
Robert Bowers, 46, died in the hospital on Tuesday after the Saturday altercation at Ponchatoula Pub, which is located in Ponchatoula, La. Bowers had gone out to watch Alabama take on LSU at Tiger Stadium on Saturday evening, his family told WRBZ. Bowers was knocked unconscious before being transported to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, La. The 46-year-old was then taken to University Medical Center, where he died.
On Sunday, Bowers’ daughter, Lexy Bowers, started a fundraiser campaign on Facebook in order to help cover medical expenses.
“My father Robert Bowers got a really bad head injury last night,” Lexy Bowers wrote on Sunday. “He was showing symptoms of being brain dead but he is now breathing on his own and there is a chance that he’ll make it. Although the chances are really slim, me and my family are staying hopeful. I ask that you please, please pray, send vibes, wish, hope for a miracle for my father! He has no medical insurance and If and when he pulls through this, he will need help covering the expenses from the hospital. I beg of you to find it in your heart to help this family in need. Even if you can’t help financially, sharing this post and prayers are greatly appreciated.”
Two men, 27-year-old Azia Crockett and 24-year-old Ryan Anthony, have been arrested and charged with felony manslaughter in connection with Bowers’ death. The full details of what led to the fight have not been released, but Police Chief Bry Layrisson told WRBZ that “it did not appear Bowers was the aggressor in the encounter.”
The Alabama fan’s family believes that his support for the Crimson Tide during the win over LSU motivated the fight.
