Mesquite ISD bus carrying children crashes and catches fire in Texas

A school bus carrying children crashed Wednesday in Mesquite, Texas, authorities said. About 40 children were in the bus from the Mesquite Independent School District when he flipped over to the side, KXAS-TV reported.

The bus caught fire in the crash, according to KXAS. The video of the scene showed the charred bus on its side next to a roadway.

The director of the DSI Mesquite, David Vroonland, confirmed on Twitter that the bus from Terry Middle School was involved in an accident and that at least one person had been taken to the hospital. Vroonland stated that the first responders were present at the scene.

"Their first priority is to make sure they have secured the area and transported the children involved," wrote Vroonland. "We can confirm that at least one person was taken to the hospital and the students on the bus are taken to Terry Middle School to find their parents."

Mesquite ISD stated that counselors were available on campus. The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.
