CARLSBAD, Calif. – Forty days into his last run of the season, right-hand Mets Jacob deGrom is officially close to Monday's Cy Young Award.
As the unofficial starting point of its awards season, the MLB and the US Baseball Writers' Association announced the three finalists for each of the top honors, including NL Cy Young: DeGrom, Max Scherzer, Washington, and Aaron Nola, from Philadelphia.
The winner will be announced at 18h. November 14
Yankees third baseman Miguel Andujar and second baseman Gleyber Torres joined Angels righthander / designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, runners-up for the AHL rookie.
Although he received a few votes, deGrom is not a finalist for MVP NL. They are Christian Yelich (Milwaukee), Nolan Arenado (Colorado) and Javier Baez (Chicago).
The news of DeGrom's inclusion as a Cy Young finalist was a mere formality for the pitcher considered the favorite to win. Among the league leaders – and often the undisputed leader – among the most significant launcher statistics, deGrom was first in the majors in ERA (1.70) and FIP (1.98), second in the majors in the heats (217) and second in the NL in WHIP (0.91) and tied for the first in the WAR (10) of Baseball Reference. He limited his opponents to three points or less in 29 consecutive starts and launched 24 consistent high-league starts, two league records in one season.
Scherzer, three-time winner of Cy Young, and Nola, a member of All-Star for the first time in 2018, also had solid years, but were disappointed with the net profit of individual pitchers: the prevention of the race. Nola had an ERA of 2.37, Scherzer of 2.53. Scherzer led the majors in the innings (220 2/3) and battles (300).
Mets chief executive Brodie Van Wagenen, who until last week was DeGrom's agent, said at his press conference: "Do not get me wrong, I think Jacob deGrom is an incredible talent and I hope to keep it for a long time.
"Jacob deGrom has clearly imposed himself as the best baseball pitcher," said Van Wagenen. "I hope that in a few weeks he will be rewarded with this trophy."
