The Mets have not yet reached the market for independent players or the free market, but their coaching staff is beginning to take shape.
Jim Riggleman was named coach of the team on Monday, replacing Gary DiSarcina, who will coach third base next season after a year alongside coach Mickey Callaway.
After a disappointing 2018 year, the Mets have reshuffled their coaches. They fired coach Pat Roessler and coach Ricky Bones, as well as DiSarcina – who has never been successful – to finish third.
Previous management experience was clearly a necessity for the head coach position this time as the Mets also interviewed Fredi Gonzalez and Bryan Price in addition to Riggleman. The three were successful in the majors, which was missing on the bench in the first year at the helm of Callaway.
Riggleman was director of the Padres, Cubs, Mariners, and Nationals and finished last season in this role with the Reds.
"Jim brings a great experience to the coaching staff," said general manager Brodie Van Wagenen in a statement. "His knowledge of the National League will be a valuable asset."
"I'm delighted to have Jim's knowledge at my side," Callaway said. "He will be a great resource for me and for all the coaching staff."
Riggleman, 66, was praised for the game played by Cincinnati after being hired to replace Price in April.
"I'm excited to join the Mets coaching staff," said Riggleman. "I can not wait to start. I think this team has a lot of potential. "
In addition, former Met Dave Magadan is "under review" to be the team's next coach, according to a source.
Magadan recently played the same role with Arizona before the two sides broke up after the season.
Magadan, 56, was selected by the Mets in 1983 and spent the first seven seasons of his career in a major 16-year league with the Mets.
He has also served as a coach of the Padres, Red Sox and Rangers.
