Mets RHP Corey Oswalt took the start of the series opening on Friday against the Marlins, and it was not a memorable outing.
Oswalt was handed over the ball in place of Jacob deGrom who was dealing with a family problem. The right-hander had only one appearance with the Mets this season, which went back to April 25th.
It was a good start for his second outing in the big, while Oswalt had a first run of 1-2-3. The second run was also quite quiet while the mere attack of Justin Bour caused no damage.
However, manager Mickey Callaway noticed that Oswalt had not made his debut from the start, and that would cost him later.
"I think even during the first two innings, he had none of his breaking stuff," Callaway said after the game. "So I think they figured out that he was struggling to get that stuff back, so they were just sitting on fastballs and they put a few in play."
The third round was when the valves opened for the Marlins.
Marlins rookie Lewis Brinson kicked off the game with a solo circuit to lead the inning. Then, with two runners on, J.T. Realmuto scored left to score Derek Dietrich to make a 2-0 match.
Starlin Castro recovered two hitters with two shots later, and to cap off the horrible run, JT Riddle smashed a three-run run to break the open play in favor of the home team. It was then that manager Mickey Callaway went around the mound to pick up the ball from Oswalt.
It was a difficult task for Oswalt, who arrived in Florida late Thursday night, to take over for just hours before the start of the match. Callaway saw things go both ways, but that was not the way he wanted to see Oswalt make his first career start.
"It can be a big challenge," Callaway said. "I saw him work both ways, I saw it help guys because there's not 24 hours of anxiety when it happens, but what do you think?" it did not work in his favor that evening. "
Oswalt said nothing changed his usual preparation for the start tonight. His struggles have just made bad pitch.
"It did not change anything," he said. "I went there and tried to attack the area, I did not make enough good shots today and I left some balls."
Overall, Oswalt allowed six earned runs on six hits. 2.2 innings.
